Religious Affairs Ministry Urges Madrasahs to Build 'Dare to Report' Culture to Prevent Violence

Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Romo H.R. Muhammad Syafi’i has urged madrasahs to tighten child protection systems by expanding supervision and fostering a culture of reporting among students to prevent cases of violence in educational environments. He stated that preventive measures must be continuously optimised to strengthen child protection across various spheres of life, including schools. “Going forward, our schools must pay serious attention to the behaviour of all stakeholders in madrasahs, whoever they may be,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to him, creating a safe educational space cannot rely solely on regulations but must be supported by a supervision system capable of detecting potential violations early. As a concrete step, he requested that madrasahs ensure the availability of CCTV in various areas prone to incidents. “Places such as meeting rooms, libraries, and counselling rooms must be under supervision,” he added.

This directive is part of the National Movement for Safe and Comfortable Spaces for Children (Gernas Rana). The Ministry of Religious Affairs is also strengthening reporting mechanisms by encouraging the use of the Anti-Violence Complaint Management Application (AMAN), which allows students to file complaints. The Deputy Minister has instructed regional offices of the Ministry of Religious Affairs at the provincial and district/city levels to socialise this complaint mechanism to all madrasahs.
