REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Apple is reportedly facing more issues than anticipated in the development of the foldable iPhone, which could delay its release by several months. These problems have arisen during the initial production testing phase, and component suppliers have been informed of the potential delays.

“The current situation could jeopardise the mass production schedule. April will be a crucial stage in technical verification testing, and the period from this month until early May is extremely critical. Apple is currently working to resolve these challenges,” a Nikkei source said, as reported by Engadget on Wednesday (8/4/2026).

Rumours of a foldable iPhone have circulated since 2017, but as of early 2026, it has yet to materialise. Meanwhile, Apple’s main rival in the foldable segment, Samsung, released its first foldable phone in 2019.

Apple initially targeted the debut of the first foldable iPhone for autumn 2026, alongside the iPhone 18. However, the project could be pushed back to 2027 if Apple encounters manufacturing or durability issues, particularly with the hinge and screen.

Apple is reportedly prioritising the foldable iPhone and other premium models for September this year due to limited supplies of components such as memory chips. However, engineering problems could disrupt those plans.

“Apple and its supply chain are working under tight deadlines, and the current solutions are not yet sufficient to fully address the engineering challenges. More time is still needed,” the Nikkei source added.

These issues have emerged during production verification testing, the fourth of six stages that new Apple products must pass before shipping. Because the foldable iPhone features an entirely new design, the device must successfully complete each stage before proceeding to pilot production and mass production.

Although it is expected to account for less than 10 per cent of iPhone production, the foldable iPhone is anticipated to be a key product in boosting consumer interest in the entire iPhone lineup.

Apple is also reportedly planning to produce seven to eight million units in the initial phase. The company has not officially announced the device and has declined to comment on the engineering issues that have arisen.
