The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) is calling on the government to extend a regulation on the terms and conditions of particular imported products and impose the mandatory implementation of Indonesian National Standards (SNI) on them to fight smuggling.
Kadin vice chairman for industry, research and technology Rachmat Gobel said Thursday the extension of the 2008 Trade Ministry regulation and the application of the SNI requirement would help curb electronics smuggling that had been intensifying in the last five years.
The regulation, which came into effect on Jan. 1 this year, is scheduled to last until the end of this year.
“… the mandatory implementation of SNI should protect our customers from illegal products,” said Gobel, who is also the chairman of the Electronics Producers Association.
In an attempt to curb electronics smuggling, Gobel said, the government should help strengthen the electronics industry by, among other measures, harmonizing import duties, to give “local electronic component producers more opportunities to benefit from the domestic market,” he said.
