Regular Brake Maintenance Can Prevent Brake Failure, Here’s What an Expert Says
Solo, Kompas.com — Brake fade is one of the most dangerous problems that can occur while driving. This condition is often triggered by braking system components that are worn, damaged, or not well maintained. Therefore, periodic brake maintenance is an important step to prevent the risk of brake failure on the road. Iwan, owner of Iwan Motor Honda Auto Clinic, says regular maintenance can help prevent brake failure, because it will inspect all of the braking components. He explains that if the braking components are in good condition, the risk of brake failure can be avoided. Meanwhile, on driving technique, Training Director of Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia (SDCI) Sony Susmana says there are several ways to anticipate damage to brakes. “Get into the habit of braking smoothly. Avoid pressing the brake pedal aggressively, which makes the brakes work harder,” Sony told Kompas.com, recently. Sony explained that drivers can also utilise engine braking to help slow the vehicle when coming to a stop. Engine braking is the method of slowing a vehicle by using engine resistance. On cars with manual transmission, engine braking is performed by downshifting to a lower gear so that engine RPM holds back the vehicle. With this technique, the braking system does not work alone because deceleration is also aided by the engine. Therefore, before long journeys, drivers should ensure all braking components are in good condition so that the braking system and engine braking can operate optimally.
