The Judicial Commission (KY) has revealed that 139 individuals have registered as candidates for Supreme Court justices in line with the needs of the Supreme Court (MA), with the number of registrants potentially increasing until the selection closes.

Head of the Judge Recruitment Division of the KY, Andi M. Asrun, stated that this figure is preliminary data as the registration process is still ongoing.

“The latest update shows 139 people have registered, although overall it is not yet complete because this is only the initial stage as participants,” he said during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday (30/3).

He compared this number to the previous period, which reached 183 registrants at the end of the selection period. Although currently lower, Andi is optimistic that the number of participants will increase.

“There is still about two weeks left, so the number of registrants is likely to be higher than now,” he explained.

On the other hand, the KY acknowledges challenges in meeting the needs for Supreme Court justices in the tax sector. One of the main obstacles comes from the career path requirements that mandate a minimum of 20 years of experience as a judge.

“There is indeed a problem with the career path because the requirement is 20 years as a judge,” said Andi.

According to him, the greatest opportunities actually come from the non-career path. However, there are consequences for active tax judges who wish to register through that route.

“If a tax judge wants to enter through the non-career path, they must first resign from their position as a tax judge. This is what becomes the problem,” he revealed.

Nevertheless, he assessed that several parties have anticipated this situation after discussions with the House of Representatives. “I think many parties are preparing to enter through the non-career path as an anticipation,” he concluded.

On the same occasion, KY Member and KY Spokesperson Anita Kadir explained that this registration is to fulfil the MA’s request for filling vacant Supreme Court justice positions at the MA, as well as ad hoc human rights judges and ad hoc corruption criminal judges at the MA.

“The selection process is carried out according to the MA’s request to fill 11 vacant justice positions consisting of 2 Supreme Court justices from the Civil Chamber, 4 from the Criminal Chamber, 2 from the Religious Chamber, 3 from the State Administrative Chamber, specifically tax, as well as 2 ad hoc human rights justices at the MA and 1 ad hoc corruption criminal justice at the MA,” she stated.

The main principle in this recruitment is equality or equal recruitment without distinguishing participants’ backgrounds.
