Registered in Indonesia, What is the Meaning of 'Danza'?
JAKARTA – The name ‘Danza’ registered by BYD in Indonesia has sparked questions, particularly regarding its meaning and intended use in the domestic market.
Luther T. Panjaitan, Head of Public & Government Relations at PT BYD Motor Indonesia, emphasised that the naming has no special significance and is focused on serving as a brand identity for commercial purposes.
‘Just like Denza, its purpose is as a brand name, so there’s no specific intent, for example, and it has indeed gone through consideration by our product division; using that name is more about the object in commercialising it later,’ said Luther in Jakarta on Wednesday (22/4/2026).
Therefore, ‘Danza’ is considered to remain aligned with the global ‘Denza’ identity, particularly in terms of similar pronunciation.
‘Yes, it’s similar like that,’ said Luther.
BYD is known to have secured the ‘Danza’ name, recorded with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI), applied for since 11 August 2025.
The application covers class 12, including vehicles and their components, as well as class 37 for maintenance, repair, and electric vehicle charging services.
This step is not unrelated to the legal dynamics faced by BYD regarding the Denza trademark in Indonesia.
As is known, BYD lost the trademark dispute after the Supreme Court rejected the company’s cassation request in case Number 1338 K/Pdt.Sus-HKI/2025.
Although an alternative name has been secured, the use of ‘Danza’ in the domestic market is still in the internal review stage.
‘We are still calculating (the opportunities), yes, because the process is not yet complete and our legal team understands it more comprehensively. I can only say that the status is still in process,’ said Luther.
