Regions in Indonesia Forecast to Experience Very Heavy Rainfall Today
Jakarta, VIVA – Rain of heavy to very heavy intensity is drenching a number of regions across Indonesia this Sunday.
BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency) forecaster Medayu Bestari said the public needs to be alert to heavy to very heavy rainfall in West Java, Central Java, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, Central Papua and Highland Papua.
"Preparedness needs to be heightened for the potential of heavy to very heavy rain in West Java, Central Java, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, Central Papua and Highland Papua," he said in the latest weather forecast update monitored via BMKG's YouTube channel in Jakarta on Sunday, 22 February 2026.
In addition, Medayu noted there is also potential for moderate-intensity rainfall. He said BMKG forecasts rain accompanied by thunderstorms may occur in Palembang (South Sumatra), Jakarta, Tanjung Selor (North Kalimantan) and Merauke (South Papua).
Heavy rainfall is forecast to drench Nabire (Central Papua), whilst moderate-intensity rain is likely in Bengkulu, Serang (Banten), Denpasar (Bali) and Mamuju (West Sulawesi).
For light rain, BMKG forecasts such conditions across parts of Sumatra, Bandung (West Java), Semarang (Central Java), Surabaya (East Java), Pontianak (West Kalimantan) and Palangkaraya (Central Kalimantan).
Light rain is also expected in Mataram (West Nusa Tenggara), Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara), Makassar (South Sulawesi), Kendari (Southeast Sulawesi), Ternate (North Maluku), Ambon (Maluku) and across most of the Papua region.
Meanwhile, thick cloud cover is forecast for Aceh, Medan (North Sumatra), Pekanbaru (Riau), Manado (North Sulawesi), Gorontalo and Palu (Central Sulawesi). BMKG also noted the potential for haze and smoke or fog in Banjarmasin (South Kalimantan) and Samarinda (East Kalimantan).
In line with these forecasts, BMKG urged the public to remain vigilant against potential extreme weather that may be accompanied by strong winds and lightning, and to keep updated with the latest weather information via the Info BMKG application, the official website www.bmkg.go.id, and BMKG's official social media channels. The public was also reminded to anticipate potential waterlogging, flooding and disruptions to daily activities resulting from heavy to very heavy rainfall expected across the aforementioned regions.
