Bandung (ANTARA) - Commission II of the West Java Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) has highlighted a serious threat to the continued preservation of green turtles on Pangumbahan Beach, Sukabumi Regency, due to an electricity infrastructure crisis that is hindering the operation of the conservation laboratory. Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the West Java DPRD, Lina Ruslinawati, emphasised that Pangumbahan Beach is the last line of defence for this unique marine life in the province, besides the Pangandaran area. However, this protective function is being hampered by fundamental technical problems. “Turtles are unique marine creatures that are not found in all regions. In West Java, conservation centres like this are very limited,” Lina said in a statement in Bandung on Tuesday. The main cause is an unstable electricity supply, as the nearest power source is up to two kilometres from the main location. This excessively long transmission line is considered to not only cause power instability for sensitive equipment but also create mobility constraints in the event of sudden technical problems. “Supportive infrastructure, such as a stable electricity supply, is an urgent need. We want to ensure that this conservation centre has adequate facilities so that its educational and preservation functions can continue sustainably,” said Lina. In response to these findings, Commission II of the West Java DPRD has assured that it will oversee the procurement of this electricity infrastructure to ensure that it is included as a priority in the 2026 budget. Lina stressed that the commitment to protecting turtle habitats must be a shared responsibility between the district, provincial, and central governments. In addition to physical improvements, Lina’s review also gathered input from local conservation groups regarding the empowerment of coastal communities in maintaining the marine ecosystem of West Java. “We will continue to encourage follow-up actions from the results of today’s meeting,” she said.
