Regents and Mayors in West Java Urged to Halt Tourism and Housing Developments in Forests and Plantations

The West Java Provincial Government is taking firm steps to curb the risk of natural disasters by requesting all regents and mayors to halt permits for tourism and housing developments in forest and plantation areas.

This policy has been enacted by West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi and formalised in Circular No. 60/PEM.04.04.01/ASDA EKBANG on the Technical Implementation of Land Use Change Control in the Province of West Java.

Dedi stated that stopping permits for tourism and housing developments is necessary to reduce the risk of natural disasters, such as landslides and floods.

He instructed regents and mayors to be more active in preserving forest and plantation areas to prevent their conversion into commercial development or residential zones.

“Regents and mayors must be more proactive in controlling land use changes and restoring conservation functions, particularly in forest and plantation areas,” said KDM, the familiar nickname for Dedi Mulyadi, quoted on Monday, 11 May 2026.

Previously, the West Java Provincial Government had issued Governor’s Regulation No. 11 of 2025 on Land Use Change Control.

The Governor’s Regulation stipulates several steps taken by the West Java Governor to control land use changes, one of which is conducting supervision.

Supervision is carried out to ensure the continuity and sustainability of land functions, protected areas, and ecological functions.

In addition to supervision, the governor restores land functions according to their designated purposes.

These steps are implemented through guidance to land rights holders and collaboration with landowners.

The governor also provides resources, including facilities, human resources, and funding, for controlling and restoring land use changes.

Furthermore, the governor oversees the land use change control implemented by relevant regional apparatus. (LAN)
