Regent saga continues

SURABAYA: Around 100 citizens of Sampang, Madura, staged a
demonstration at the East Java legislature in Surabaya on Monday
in protest against the installation of the newly elected regent
of Sampang.

The protesters demanded that the home affairs minister and the
East Java governor cancel the inauguration of Fadhilah as the
Sampang regent. Protest against Fadhilah's victory started last
year when some groups said that he was involved in a swindle.

Most of the councilors at the regional assembly, however, were
not available as the demonstrators, who carried various posters,
wanted to meet with all factions to convey their aspirations.

Only representatives of the National Awakening Party (PAN)
faction, who have so far opposed the installation, received the
Sampang born visitors, while the rest were unavailable for
unknown reasons. -- Antara
