Jakarta (ANTARA) — Thousand Islands Regent Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan has designated Pramuka Island as a pilot site for the ‘My Island, Zero Waste’ programme, as part of a commitment to creating a clean, sustainable island environment.

“The inhabited island selected as a pilot for the programme is Pramuka Island, in Pulau Panggang urban village, North Thousand Islands district,” Fadjar said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Integrated waste management will involve all sections of the community and support efforts to improve environmental quality for the Adipura assessment.

He said that achieving ‘My Island, Zero Waste’ would require more than waste collection and clean-up activities. It would also require changes in public attitudes and behaviour, particularly sorting waste at its source and making better use of waste that has so far been treated as residue.

To achieve this, Fadjar said, the local administration was encouraging all stakeholders on Pramuka Island to take part. They include public infrastructure and facilities officers (PPSU), other local service workers (PJLP), community leaders, neighbourhood association administrators, Community Consultative Institutions (LMK), environmental and waste-management volunteers, businesses and the wider community.

“This collaboration is expected to build shared responsibility for keeping the island clean and ensuring that the 2.5 tonnes of waste produced each day are fully processed at the 3R waste-processing site. It will also create a sustainable waste-management system,” Fadjar said.

He added that six of the Thousand Islands’ 11 inhabited islands have a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R) waste-processing facility.

Other islands manage their waste according to the facilities available and local conditions. “Waste from nearby tourist islands and resort areas is also being encouraged to be managed independently through the processing facilities available,” he said.
