Regent Challenges Photographers to Discover New Tourist Destinations in Karangasem

Karangasem Regent I Gusti Putu Parwata (Gus Par) has issued a challenge to local photographers to seek out and capture new tourist destinations that remain largely unknown to the public. Photographers who succeed in finding and exploring these new potentials will be given a reward.

The challenge was presented during the ‘Karangasem Agung’ photo exhibition held by the Karangasem Photographer Community (KPK) in collaboration with the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) Karangasem at the AA Karang Candra Bhuana Cultural Centre on Wednesday evening (12/8/2026).

Gus Par expressed his admiration for the works of local photographers, stating that their creativity proves the region possesses creative resources capable of promoting local potential through visual media. He urged photographers not to limit themselves to already popular tourist spots but to explore new angles and undiscovered destinations.

‘A reward will be given to those who can find and explore new potentials in Karangasem during the exhibition series,’ Gus Par said. He emphasised that cameras serve not only as artistic tools but also as powerful promotional media to highlight the region’s tourism, culture, MSMEs, and creative economy.

KPK Chairman I Wayan Surya Edy Gautama welcomed the challenge, confirming that the community would immediately begin searching for new locations to photograph. The current exhibition features 26 works showcasing various aspects of the region’s potential.

PWI Karangasem Chairman Ketut Parwata noted that the exhibition is an effort to document the face of Karangasem through the lenses of local photographers. He added that next year’s exhibition will focus more specifically on journalistic and photo-journalistic works.
