Regent bans luxury villas

BANYUMAS, Central Java: Regent Djoko Sudantoko has refused the application of developer PT Pumas Basita to build 500 luxurious villas in the Munggangsari area, east of the tourist resort Baturaden at the foot of Mountain Slamet.

Djoko explained he refused to issue the permits because the site is a water catchment area which should be protected. "If those villas are built, soon this area will be flooded just like Jakarta," he said.

"No matter who the inventors are, I refuse to allow the construction," he said. "I have trouble enough trying to supervise violations by the 800-odd villas and hotels which are already built." (wah/swe)
