The Thousand Islands Water Resources Sub-Department is building a protective embankment on Cikaya Beach, Karya Island, Panggang Village, North Thousand Islands Sub-District, as an effort to prevent erosion. “The construction of this embankment is a follow-up to proposals from residents submitted through the 2025 Development Planning Consultation (Musrenbang),” said the Head of the Beach Section of the Thousand Islands Water Resources Sub-Department, Wahyu Maulana, in Jakarta on Wednesday. He explained that the purpose of building the embankment is to withstand sea waves and prevent erosion that could damage the coastline, as well as to improve safety and comfort for residents and tourists. According to him, the embankment construction is being carried out in stages, and in the previous year, work had been completed for approximately 100 metres. “This year, the construction continues with an additional length of 65 metres,” said Wahyu. He stated that the embankment structure is designed to be sturdy using solid concrete cubes in a three-to-two (3:2) formation, resulting in a height of about 1.2 metres and a width of around 80 centimetres. The entire construction process is carried out manually by 10 Blue Force personnel, from transporting the solid cubes from Panggang Island to assembling them at the project site, with adequate work equipment support. The work has been underway since early April and is targeted to be completed next week. “We hope this embankment provides a sense of security for residents and further supports tourism activities on Karya Island,” said Wahyu. Meanwhile, the Chairman of RT 03/01 in Panggang Village, Abdul Rohim, hopes that the presence of the embankment will provide long-term benefits, not only in preserving the coastal area but also in promoting the development of local tourism potential. “This beach is frequently visited by tourists, so the embankment is expected to make the area safer, more organised, and comfortable for visitors and residents alike,” he said.
