Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Thousand Islands Water Resources Sub-Department is building underground drainage channels and infiltration wells in the residential areas of Pulau Panggang Ward, North Thousand Islands Sub-District, as an effort to address flooding during heavy rains.

“This construction is being carried out in RT 01/RW 02 and RT 01/RW 05 as an effort to tackle the pooling that often occurs during heavy rain,” said the Head of the Thousand Islands Water Resources Sub-Department, Mustajab, in Jakarta on Monday.

He stated that the project is a follow-up to the official requests from residents, as the area is indeed prone to inundation when rainfall is high.

His team is deploying 11 personnel to build underground drainage channels, each 40 metres long, complete with infiltration wells.

Each infiltration well measures 40 centimetres x 40 cm with a depth of 50 cm. The wells are then connected using four-inch diameter PVC pipes to facilitate subsurface water flow.

According to Mustajab, the work is being done manually, from excavation to installation. Once completed, the infiltration wells will be covered with plates.

He hopes that the underground drainage and infiltration wells will reduce surface runoff and minimise pooling in the residential areas.

“The work began on 20 April and is targeted for completion next week,” he said.
