Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chair of Commission D of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Yuke Yurike, views the creation of a road crossing marking or zebra cross by residents in Tebet, South Jakarta, as an opportunity for the DKI Provincial Government (Pemprov) to collaborate with the community to properly manage the environment.

“The involvement of the community should not be ignored. They are not competitors; instead, they should be invited to become part of the oversight system,” said Yuke in Jakarta on Wednesday, responding to the Pac-Man character-themed zebra cross in the Tebet area, South Jakarta.

She emphasised the importance of the government involving the community as part of the environmental oversight and improvement system.

According to her, through good collaboration between the government and the community, the arrangement of public facilities in Jakarta is expected to run more optimally while encouraging the creation of a safe, orderly, and aesthetic city.

“I appreciate the residents’ initiative in carrying it out with creativity and the intention to help. This is what should actually be embraced and collaborated on by the relevant agencies and the Provincial Government,” Yuke stated.

Nevertheless, she stressed that the creation of zebra crosses must still adhere to applicable regulations, particularly in terms of traffic safety.

“If it’s too fancy in risky places, it can be dangerous, for example, people slowing down while crossing because they’re looking at the image, while the traffic is dense,” Yuke explained.

However, she opened the possibility of applying creative zebra crosses in certain locations, such as areas near parks or zones with lower traffic risk levels.

Even, she said, attractive designs can serve as educational tools, especially for children, to be more orderly when crossing the road.

“In places that are not too risky, that (zebra cross) can be made attractive and aesthetic, even as education so that people want to cross at the zebra cross,” Yuke revealed.
