Regarding TikTok Gifts for Purbaya, KPK: If in Doubt, Feel Free to Report
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) responded to the incident involving Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa receiving several gifts during a live TikTok broadcast with his son. The anti-corruption agency advised Purbaya to report to the KPK if he harboured any doubts about whether the gifts fell into the category of gratification.
“However, if there is still doubt, feel free to consult or report to the KPK,” said KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo at the KPK’s Red and White Building in South Jakarta on Friday (27 February).
Budi explained that the KPK had reviewed the TikTok livestream video. In the recording, Purbaya was seen emphasising that he could not accept any gifts due to his status as a state official.
“First, we expressed appreciation and gratitude, because in the broadcast the Minister demonstrated awareness and concern regarding the potential for gratification,” Budi said.
Technically, the recipient of the gifts in the broadcast was Purbaya’s son, as the owner of the TikTok account used. Budi assessed that the son had no direct connection to his father’s work as a state official and minister.
“In this context, we see that the recipient is his son, who has no connection or relationship with the duties, functions, and position of his father as Minister and state official,” Budi explained.
Although no violation appeared evident on the surface, the KPK nevertheless remained open for Purbaya to hold formal consultations. The KPK ensured it would follow up on every report to provide legal certainty for the official concerned.
“Every report will be analysed, and the results of that analysis will determine whether the gifts belong to the recipient or to the state,” Budi concluded.
