Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Deputy Head of BKPM, Todotua Pasaribu, has affirmed the government’s full support for the strategic steps taken by Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (PNRE) and Toyota in developing the bioethanol industry in Indonesia. A meeting with the CEO of Toyota Motor Asia on 20 April 2026 marks significant progress from the exploratory stage towards more concrete cooperation agreements. “The collaboration between Pertamina and Toyota serves as a real example of synergy between state-owned enterprises and global investors in building the energy ecosystem of the future in Indonesia,” stated Todotua Pasaribu during a media briefing in Jakarta on Monday (20/4). He added that the government continues to encourage the process towards agreements to be promptly followed up to the construction stage. Previously reported, PNRE and Toyota agreed to explore cooperation for building a bioethanol plant in Lampung. Todotua explained that this collaboration focuses on developing bioethanol based on second-generation (2G) technology with multi-feedstock, utilising domestic resources such as palm oil biomass, corn, and sorghum. The project is expected to support national energy needs while reducing reliance on imported fuels. The government has also prepared a mandatory biofuel blending roadmap: E5 (2026-2027), E10 (2028-2030), up to a long-term target towards E20. “We are optimistic that this collaboration will have a major impact, both in strengthening national energy resilience, promoting downstream industrialisation, and creating added value for the Indonesian economy,” he emphasised.
