Regarding 5% Parliamentary Threshold, Dasco: No Final Decision Yet

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, has addressed the recent meeting between political party chairpersons regarding the parliamentary threshold.

Dasco explained that the meeting was merely in the brainstorming stage to align initial views before the discussion of the Election Law revision is undertaken by the factions within the DPR.

“The meeting of the political party chairpersons was only a brainstorming session regarding the preparations for the discussion of the election law, which will be carried out by the factions in the DPR,” Dasco told reporters at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday, 17 September 2026.

He added that discussions between parties will continue alongside the legislative process, which is expected to be a lengthy endeavour. Consequently, the various outcomes emerging from these initial meetings cannot yet be regarded as a collective decision.

“This brainstorming is only in its early stages and will continue to ensure that the discussions by the factions in the DPR can proceed smoothly,” he said.

Dasco also emphasised that no specific figure regarding the parliamentary threshold was established during the meeting. He noted that the 5 per cent figure previously mentioned by Gerindra Secretary-General Sugiono was merely one outcome of the discussions, rather than a final decision.

“Since this is brainstorming, there has been no determination yet. The results of those discussions are, among other things, what was conveyed by Mr Sugiono. That is all,” he stated.

In addition to inter-party discussions, Dasco noted that the DPR is also awaiting the results of public participation conducted by Commission II of the DPR as part of the preparations for the Election Law revision.

“While we from the parties wait, we are also awaiting the results of public participation from Commission II of the DPR, which will precede the discussions and continue to invite public input,” Dasch said.

He added that inter-party brainstorming will continue in accordance with the dynamics of the Election Law revision process in the DPR.

“The discussion process will be long. Naturally, further brainstorming sessions will continue, following the dynamics of the ongoing discussions,” he concluded.

Previously, the Secretary-General of the Gerindra Party, Sugiono, stated that his party agreed to a parliamentary threshold of five per cent in the discussions regarding the revision of the Election Law.
