Reform needed for true democracy
Reform needed for true democracy
From Suara Karya
The necessary reforms for true democracy have not been fully
carried out because of the presence of various political groups
that are reluctant to work seriously toward creating an ideal
democratic state that is capable of guaranteeing the wellbeing of
the public.
These groups comprise politicians who prioritize their own
interests without heeding the pluralstic and diverse nature of
the nation. They seek to benefit from the reforms that have been
instituted to further their own goals and securing strategic
positions.
In the name of the majority, they put on the appearance of
working for democracy while in reality sacrificing the interests
of the nation. In democracy, the needs of minorities and
community members should all be well taken care of.
While guaranteeing the social security and interests of all
segments in society regardless of ethnic, racial and religious
backgrounds, a democratic state also upholds the law, respects
human rights and pays attention to the environment.
However, law enforcement and human rights should apply to all
citizens without discrimination, whereas environmental
conservation should not find itself in conflict with economic
interests.
Though democracy is identical to freedom, this freedom is not
unlimited. If exercised without limits, freedom will only result
in the majority's dominance of minority groups. This has the
potential to cause disharmony and friction in national life,
which runs counter to the reform agenda.
With the approaching second-round presidential election, let
us hope our new leaders will really uphold the principles of
democracy for the future peace and welfare of the Indonesian
population.
