One of Roy Suryo’s legal representatives, Refly Harun, stated that his client did not sign an arrest warrant when he was picked up by investigators from the Metro Jaya Regional Police on Friday morning (19/6) in connection with allegations of a fake diploma belonging to Indonesia’s 7th President, Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

“Mr Roy was firm, without signing the arrest warrant,” Refly told reporters at the Metro Jaya Police headquarters in South Jakarta on Friday afternoon.

Refly explained that he had parted ways with Roy Suryo around midnight the previous day. He then received news that Roy had been picked up by investigators without legal counsel present that morning. Refly said they had separated between 00:30 and 01:00 WIB after attending an event in Bandung. A few hours later, Roy was taken by investigators.

Furthermore, Refly said Roy had no time to make adequate preparations before being forcibly taken to the Metro Jaya Police headquarters. “Mr Roy told me, when I met him in the Sub-Directorate for State Security room, that he didn’t have time for anything. He was lucky to have managed to perform the dawn prayer. So he hadn’t showered, wasn’t properly dressed, and was then forced to be brought to the Metro Jaya Police,” he said.

Meanwhile, Refly added that his other client, Tifauziah Tyassuma, also known as Dr Tifa, was arrested one hour before she was due to sit her dissertation examination for her doctoral programme at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI). “Once again, we strongly protest this arrest and detention. Especially as it was carried out when Dr Tifa was about to take her dissertation exam, her results seminar. At 8 o’clock she was due to sit the exam, she was arrested at 7. Even though she was about to leave for the examination venue,” he stated.

As of the time of writing, the Metro Jaya Regional Police had yet to provide a statement to journalists regarding the arrest. The police had previously stated that the case files for Roy Suryo and Tifauzia Tyassuma in the fake diploma defamation case against the 7th President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, had been declared complete, or P21, by the DKI Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office. “Alhamdulillah, the prosecutor has stated today that the case files we sent to the DKI High Prosecutor’s Office no longer require the fulfilment of the deficiencies that we have previously addressed,” said the Director of General Criminal Investigation at Metro Jaya Police, Senior Commissioner Iman Imanuddin, at the police headquarters on Tuesday (2/6).

Previously, the Metro Jaya Police investigated the alleged defamation case regarding the fake diploma claims after a direct report was made by Jokowi. In the case, the police named several individuals as suspects. However, some of them, including Rismon Hasiholan Sianipar, reached a legal resolution through a substantive justice (restorative justice) approach after meeting Jokowi and apologising. Rismon has since affirmed the authenticity of Jokowi’s diploma and authored a book titled ‘Otentikasi Ijazah Joko Widodo’. The final draft of his work has been signed by Jokowi, and the father of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has requested that Rismon hold a book review event at Gadjah Mada University (UGM).
