Reflections of Chandra Kesuma During Tenure as Gianyar Police Chief, Tasked with Securing Ubud

AKBP Chandra Kesuma has now been appointed as the Deputy Director of Special Crimes for the Bali Regional Police. During his tenure as the Gianyar Police Chief, Chandra stated that he was given a specific mandate to maintain security and order within the Ubud District.

“I was given a special task to secure Ubud,” Chandra remarked during a handover ceremony in Gianyar on Friday (31/07/2026).

Chandra claimed that during his term as Gianyar Police Chief, there were no highly prominent criminal cases. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that criminal activity did occur in Ubud on several occasions. According to Chandra, every emerging case was handled swiftly to ensure safety and a sense of security in an area densely populated by international tourists.

“There is indeed crime in Ubud. However, I always endeavoured to ensure rapid handling,” he said.

The new Gianyar Police Chief, AKBP James Rajaguguk, stated that as the new leader of the Gianyar Police, he hopes to receive support from all parties, ranging from the local community to the Gianyar Regency Government.

“I appreciate all the personnel who have helped make the Gianyar Police better. Now, allow me to join and become a resident of Gianyar,” said James.

The Regent of Gianyar, I Made Agus Mahayastra, noted that there are significant responsibilities awaiting James in his new role. The most immediate agenda is the election of village heads (perbekel) in 26 villages across Gianyar in September 2026.

“For the new Police Chief, there is still homework to do, namely the village head elections,” said Mahayastra.

Mahayastra mentioned that there are several candidates in certain villages whose presence could potentially increase political tension. Two villages of particular concern are Tegallalang and Payangan.

“Tensions are rising. There is tension in Tegallalang and also in Payangan. But the most important thing is to maintain security,” he added.
