REEV Technology Enters Indonesia, Changan Bets on Deepal S05
Range Extender Electric Vehicle (REEV) technology is being introduced to the Indonesian automotive market as an alternative to accelerate the adoption of electrified vehicles. Changan Indonesia plans to launch the Deepal S05 REEV, which it claims can meet long-distance mobility needs while reducing user concerns about range and the availability of charging infrastructure. The arrival of this technology is considered relevant to the Indonesian electric vehicle market, which continues to grow but still faces challenges such as limited charging stations in some areas and high demand for intercity travel. CEO of Changan Indonesia, Setiawan Surya, stated that Indonesia has a unique market character because interest in electric vehicles is rising while mobility needs remain highly diverse. He said REEV technology could be a transitional solution towards wider electric vehicle adoption in the future. Unlike conventional hybrid vehicles, the Deepal S05 REEV is fully driven by a 160 kW electric motor with 320 Nm of torque. The 1,497 cc internal combustion engine does not drive the wheels but acts solely as a generator to charge the battery when needed. This technology allows the vehicle to retain the responsive and quiet driving character of an electric car while offering flexibility for long-distance travel. The Deepal S05 REEV is equipped with a 27.28 kWh Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) battery, enabling a pure electric range of up to 170 kilometres based on NEDC testing. When the battery charge decreases, the range extender system automatically activates to maintain energy supply. With a full battery and fuel tank, the vehicle is claimed to be capable of travelling more than 1,100 kilometres. It also supports DC Fast Charging, allowing a charge from 30 to 80 percent in about 20 minutes, and features regenerative braking and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) to enhance energy efficiency. The design was developed in Turin, Italy, focusing on aerodynamic efficiency and cabin comfort, while safety is prioritised through the use of high-strength steel and aluminium in the body structure. This model complements Changan’s electrified vehicle lineup in Indonesia, alongside the Deepal S07 and Lumin. With distribution and after-sales support from the Indomobil Group, the company is optimistic that REEV technology will expand electrified vehicle options for national consumers. Setiawan said Changan views the transition to electric vehicles as a process requiring solutions that fit current public needs, and the company will soon introduce the Deepal S05 REEV in Indonesia as a step towards supporting the shift to more environmentally friendly mobility.
