Reddit Accessible in Indonesia Without VPN After 11-Year Block
Surprising and welcome news has arrived for internet users in the country. After a long wait of more than a decade, the global online forum platform Reddit is reported to be accessible again in Indonesia without the need to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or alternative DNS.
Based on reports on Friday (3/7), access to the site, dubbed the ‘front page of the internet’, has opened up normally. Users can now explore various communities or subreddits directly through domestic internet networks, marking the end of the blocking period that has lasted since 2015.
As is well known, the Indonesian government, through relevant authorities, implemented the block on Reddit approximately 11 years ago. The primary reason behind the policy was the assessment that the platform contained content that did not comply with censorship regulations and prevailing norms in Indonesia at that time.
During the period of blocking, users in Indonesia, often referred to as Redditors, had to rely on third-party services such as VPNs to interact on the platform. However, as of July 2026, testing access through various popular browsers such as Google Chrome and Safari on mobile devices, tablets, and laptops shows that all Reddit features are functioning normally.
Access Notes: Users can now smoothly access the home page, comment sections, and user profiles. Direct access via specific addresses such as reddit.com/r/[community_name] is also usable without technical obstacles.
Reddit is a platform established in the United States in 2005. The platform’s main strength lies in its system of highly specific sub-communities or subreddits. Each community has its own rules managed by volunteer moderators, covering topics ranging from technology, hobbies, and music to global political discussions.
Interaction on Reddit is driven by an upvote and downvote system. This system allows the community to democratically determine which content deserves more attention. The more upvotes a post receives, the higher its position on the main page, creating content curation based on user interests.
The return of official access to Reddit without a VPN provides convenience for professionals, software developers, and hobbyists in Indonesia. For a long time, Reddit has often been a primary reference for seeking technical solutions and tutorials not found on other social media platforms.
Although access has been opened, users are expected to remain wise in their interactions and comply with the norms and laws applicable in Indonesia’s digital space. To date, there has been no further official statement regarding the details of any agreement or changes in content policy that underpin the lifting of this block after 11 years.
