Internet users in Indonesia received surprising and welcome news as the global online forum platform Reddit is now reportedly accessible again without the need for a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or alternative DNS. Based on reports on Friday (3/7), access to the site, often dubbed the ‘front page of the internet’, has been restored normally. Users can now browse various communities or subreddits directly through domestic internet networks, marking the end of a block that had been in place since 2015. The government had originally blocked Reddit on the grounds that the platform contained content deemed incompatible with Indonesia’s censorship regulations and social norms at the time. During the blocking period, Indonesian users, often called Redditors, had to rely on third-party services like VPNs to interact on the platform. However, as of July 2026, access trials via popular browsers such as Google Chrome and Safari on mobile phones, tablets, and laptops showed that all Reddit features are functioning normally. Users can now smoothly access the homepage, comment sections, and user profiles. Direct access formats, such as reddit.com/r/[community_name], are also usable without technical hindrance. Reddit is a platform founded in the United States in 2005. Its main strength lies in its highly specific sub-community system, or subreddits, each with its own rules managed by volunteer moderators, covering topics from technology and hobbies to music and global political discussions. Interaction on Reddit is driven by an upvote and downvote system, allowing the community to democratically determine which content deserves more attention. The more upvotes a post receives, the higher its position on the main page, creating content curation based on user interest. The official restoration of access to Reddit without a VPN provides convenience for professionals, software developers, and hobbyists in Indonesia, who have long used the platform as a primary reference for technical solutions and tutorials not found on other social media. Despite the unblocking, users are expected to remain prudent in their interactions and comply with the norms and laws governing Indonesia’s digital space.
