Red Cross to protect human dignity

INDONESIA: The international Red Cross and Red Crescent societies reaffirmed their commitment to help save more lives and protect human dignity on the occasion of the International Red Cross and Crescent Day, which falls on May 8.

"Today is ... an appropriate moment to reaffirm our commitment in our agenda for humanitarian action to tackle four specific issues: people missing in armed conflicts and the plight of their families; the human cost of easy access to and misuse of weapons; reducing the risk and impact of disasters and reducing the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV/AIDS and other diseases," Jacob Kellenberger, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Juan Manuel Suarez del Toro president of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said in their joint message to commemorate the special day.

A copy of the statement was made available to The Jakarta Post on Sunday by the International Committee of the Red Cross' Jakarta office. --JP
