Red and White Illumination at Niagara Falls Marks Indonesia's 81st Independence Day
To commemorate the 81st anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Indonesia, the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Toronto presented a red and white illumination at Niagara Falls, Canada. The Government of the Province of Ontario also conveyed its congratulations to the Indonesian community on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence.
According to a statement from KJRI Toronto on Tuesday (18/8/2026), at exactly 10.00 p.m. local time on Monday (17/8), Niagara Falls glowed in red and white, accompanied by a fireworks display that added to the festive atmosphere. Dozens of Indonesian citizens and diaspora members who travelled from various parts of Ontario attended the special moment.
For the Indonesians present, the red and white illumination was not merely a light show, but a source of pride and love for the homeland. Amid the rushing waters of Niagara Falls, the red and white colours conveyed a message that the spirit of independence, unity, and love for Indonesia knows no geographical boundaries.
The moment also served as a reminder of the strong bond between the Indonesian community in Canada and their homeland. Far from Indonesia, the red and white remains a symbol of unity that brings the diaspora together and keeps the national spirit alive wherever they are.
The red and white illumination at Niagara Falls was part of a series of events for the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence organised by KJRI Toronto, which included sports tournaments and various traditional independence competitions, a proclamation moment ceremony, and a flag-raising ceremony at Toronto City Hall.
The Government of the Province of Ontario also conveyed its congratulations to the Indonesian community on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence. The message was delivered by Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario, to the Indonesian community in Ontario through a special message for this year’s Indonesian independence celebration.
In his message, Premier Ford extended congratulations on the 81st anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Indonesia and expressed hope for ever-closer relations between the Indonesian community and Ontario.
“I am pleased to congratulate the Indonesian community on the 81st anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Indonesia. Thank you for the wonderful partnership over the years. I want to say congratulations. May you prosper,” he said.
In 2025, data from Global Affairs Canada indicated that Indonesia was Canada’s third-largest merchandise trading partner in Southeast Asia, with total merchandise trade reaching approximately 6.7 billion Canadian dollars. Ontario holds a strategic position in the development of this relationship.
The Government of Ontario is actively promoting the diversification of international trade and strengthening relations with markets in the Asia-Pacific region. In April 2026, Premier Ford emphasised the importance of expanding Ontario’s trade relations with non-United States markets, including through enhanced economic ties with various countries in Asia.
For Indonesia, Ontario is also an important partner because the province is home to the largest Indonesian community. According to Statistics Canada data, more than 10,000 Indonesian diaspora members reside in Ontario, the largest number in all of Canada.
Economic relations between Indonesia and Canada have also entered a new chapter with the signing of the Canada-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in September 2025. The agreement is expected to open greater opportunities for businesses in both countries.
