Recycle Me Initiative Strengthens Plastic Waste Collection System in Bali

Bali now has a new step in strengthening its sustainable waste management system. Through a strategic collaboration, the ‘Recycle Me’ initiative has been officially launched to improve post-consumer packaging collection by providing PET bottle drop box facilities at various strategic points across the Island of the Gods.

The programme is the result of cooperation between the Coca-Cola System in Indonesia, comprising Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Indonesia (CCEP Indonesia) and Coca-Cola Indonesia, together with PT Global Retailindo Pratama, a retail company that oversees the M Mart and Big M networks. In the initial phase, these collection facilities are available at 20 M Mart outlets spread across Bali.

The launch of the Recycle Me programme was carried out in response to the growing need for effective waste management solutions. Based on data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), Bali produces around 1.25 million tonnes of waste each year, equivalent to 3,436 tonnes per day, with plastic waste accounting for more than 17 percent of the total volume.

Head of the Bali Provincial Forestry and Environment Office, I Made Dwi Arbani, expressed appreciation for this concrete step by the private sector.

“Bali is currently facing significant waste management challenges, requiring the involvement of all parties to deliver sustainable solutions. We appreciate the collaboration between Coca-Cola and M Mart through the ‘Recycle Me’ initiative, which provides easier access for the public to return post-consumer packaging so that it can be recycled,” he said.

He added that this initiative serves as a clear example of how businesses can contribute directly to accelerating the implementation of a circular economy in Bali. With drop boxes at easily accessible retail outlets, it is hoped that public awareness of sorting and depositing PET plastic bottle waste can increase significantly.

This step is aligned with a long-term commitment to creating an integrated packaging collection ecosystem, ensuring that used plastic bottles do not end up in the environment or landfill, but are instead reprocessed into valuable raw materials.
