Recurring House Fires Plague Seyegan Home
The recurring fires at the Mutfiana family’s home in Mriyan X Hamlet, Margomulyo, Seyegan, Sleman, persist. The latest incident occurred last night when the homeowner’s towel spontaneously ignited. Homeowner Mutfiana stated that the fires began early Saturday, 23 May 2026, and continued until Wednesday, 27 May, with flames appearing randomly across the property. Similar to last night’s incident, a towel in the bedroom, which had never previously caught fire, spontaneously ignited. Fortunately, she noticed it immediately and extinguished the flames. ‘Fires are still occurring, and the locations are shifting. Last night at around 10:55 PM WIB, a towel was set alight,’ Fia said during an interview at her home on Thursday, 28 May. ‘There have been 39 fires across 34 separate locations, consuming furniture, clothing, mats, and other flammable items. It’s odd that the upper parts burn while the lower sections remain untouched,’ she explained. Following a DIY Police Regional Gegana team inspection on Sunday, 24 May, which identified a methane gas leak, she repaired the septic tank drainage. However, fires continued to occur, particularly at night, despite the repairs. ‘We have followed all Gegana recommendations. Clothing has been moved to safety, yet fires still occur,’ she added. Fia reported the incidents to police. Gegana officials stated the fires persist due to residual methane gas still seeping from underground. ‘They said it’s just burning off the remaining gas underground. Methane could take weeks or months to dissipate entirely,’ she noted. Currently, she and her family temporarily relocate each night. The building, which also serves as a poultry slaughterhouse, remains guarded overnight. Since the incidents, she has been visited by several traditional healers, including one from Godean who attempted to retrieve ancestral relics. Residents of Mriyan X Hamlet, Margomulyo, Seyegan, Sleman were alarmed by repeated fires damaging household items. Police investigations suggest methane gas leakage from a septic tank as the cause. Homeowner Mutfiana said fires had occurred over two days, initially igniting fabric. ‘It started Saturday, 23 May, at midnight. Fabric first caught fire, then spread to door frames,’ Mutfiana told reporters on Sunday, 24 May 2026. Soon after, flames erupted elsewhere, burning other items. The incidents continued recurring until midday. She explained each fire began without sparks or explosions, with items igniting spontaneously. Officers from Sleman Police Department’s Inafis team and DIY Police Regional Gegana unit inspected the scene. Preliminary findings indicate methane gas from the septic tank triggered the fires. ‘According to the DIY Police Regional Gegana team’s findings, methane gas leakage from a non-compliant septic tank drainage system allowed gas to enter the house and ignite fires,’ said Seyegan Police Chief AKP Pujiono during a Sunday, 24 May, confirmation.
