Makassar (ANTARA) - The Rector of Hasanuddin University (Unhas), Professor Jamaluddin Jompa (JJ), has requested that the newly inaugurated Unhas Police Studies Centre focus on resolving the increasingly alarming issue of fish bombing.

In a statement in Makassar on Thursday, Professor JJ noted that the establishment of the Police Studies Centre represents a significant achievement for Unhas, as it is the first time such a centre has been initiated within the university’s scope.

While the Unhas Faculty of Law has been entrusted as the primary base for research, the approach used will be multidisciplinary, involving various scientific fields.

Furthermore, Professor JJ cited several issues requiring a multidisciplinary approach, such as juvenile delinquency, illegal street racing, and various environmental and security concerns in maritime areas.

One issue receiving specific attention from the Rector is the practice of fish bombing.

Professor JJ explicitly requested that the issue of fish bombing be one of the initial tasks to be studied by the Unma Police Studies Centre.

“How can we resolve fish bombing in our waters? We must not only examine the legal articles, but ensure this study centre makes the issue a primary focus of research to find solutions through both single-discipline and multidisciplinary approaches,” he emphasised.

The study centre is expected to evolve into a collaborative space between academics and the police to examine various security and social issues based on research.

“Every research finding from the study centre will serve as our reference. Therefore, we will not rely solely on routine and experience, but rather race towards progress based on data and research results,” he added.

Inspector General of Police, Djuhandhani, noted that violations in maritime areas, including fish bombing, are quite complex problems.

Various steps have been taken, ranging from socialisation to monitoring, but according to him, collective thinking is still required to find more effective solutions.

Consequently, he believes that collaboration between the police and academics is essential to produce evidence-based policies.
