Rector candidates drop out of race

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: Three of the five candidates for the
position of rector of Sudirman University in the city resigned
even before the voting began.

Kamio, H. Tholib and Showan Masyhuri are believed to have
dropped out of the running due to the distribution of pamphlets
which discredited them.

The pamphlets started circulating during the campaign.

Acting rector Adisoewirjo said the election would proceed as
scheduled.

The post of rector has been vacant since the recent death of
Soebardi. (wah/01)
