Karawang, CNBC Indonesia - Agriculture Minister and National Food Agency (Bapanas) Head Amran Sulaiman is optimistic that Indonesia will not need to import rice throughout this year. This confidence is driven by the government’s rice reserves (CBP) currently at the highest level in history.

“Alhamdulillah, we won’t import in 2025; Insyaallah, no imports in 2026. Let’s pray for each other and collaborate; Insyaallah, no rice imports in 2026. Our reserves are the highest in history for April,” said Amran during a surprise inspection (sidak) at JDP Karawang 1 Logistic Park, West Java, on Thursday (23/4/2026).

This optimism is supported by a surge in national rice stocks, which have now exceeded 5.1 million tons. This figure is said to be the highest in history.

“Alhamdulillah, today, 23 April 2026, at 8:55 a.m. (WIB), the rice stock across Indonesia is 5,198,000 tons (updated to 5,000,198 tons). This is the first time; it has never happened in history. This is the first in history. This is the result of all our hard work,” he stated.

Amran conveyed this during a direct inspection of the rice storage warehouse at JDP Karawang 1 Logistic Park, a private facility rented by Perum Bulog. He was accompanied by Bulog President Director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani.

The abundant stock has forced Bulog to increase storage capacity by renting warehouses in various regions. In Karawang alone, the rented warehouse capacity reaches 102,000 tons and is now almost full.

“We are at the warehouse… this is a rented warehouse; the total capacity here in Karawang and surrounding areas that we have rented is 102,000 tons, already filled with 80,000 tons; in about two weeks, this will be full again,” Amran explained.

Nationally, Bulog’s limited warehouse capacity of around 3 million tons has prompted the government to rent additional space amounting to millions of tons. Even the storage capacity is projected to continue increasing.

“We have rented warehouses across Indonesia for 2 million tons. Bulog’s warehouse capacity is only 3 million tons; now we have rented 2 million tons, which is now full with only 800,000 tons left, and we have rented again approximately 1 million tons capacity. So, it will be 6 million tons,” he elaborated.

With such abundant stock conditions, the government assesses that national food security, particularly for rice, is in a strong position, allowing import needs to be suppressed throughout this year.
