Record broken: 96,940 foreign tourists travelled by train in July 2026
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Trains are increasingly becoming the preferred choice for foreign tourists exploring various cities across Indonesia. In July 2026, KAI served 96,940 foreign tourists on long-distance trains. This figure marks the highest monthly volume since 2022.
The July 2026 achievement increased by 8.28% compared to July 2025, when 89,526 foreign tourists were recorded. The number was also 67.21% higher than the January–July 2026 monthly average of approximately 57,973 foreign tourists.
KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba said the growth demonstrates the strengthening position of rail travel in intercity tourism for foreign visitors.
“Nearly 97,000 foreign tourists used long-distance trains in July 2026. This is the highest monthly record since 2022 and shows that trains are increasingly becoming part of their travel experience in Indonesia,” said Anne.
Cumulatively, from January to July 2026 KAI served 405,814 foreign tourists, an increase of 3.86% compared to the same period in 2025, which saw 390,745 foreign tourists.
This growth continues the upward trend in rail usage by foreign tourists in recent years. In 2022, the number of foreign tourists using long-distance trains was recorded at 300,708, rising to 580,995 in 2023, then 669,226 in 2024, and reaching 694,123 in 2025. As of July 2026, the figure had already reached 405,814 foreign tourists.
Foreign tourist departures were spread across cities with high tourism activity. In July 2026, Yogyakarta Station was the departure station with the highest number of foreign tourists at 21,933. It was followed by Gambir with 18,480 foreign tourists and Bandung with 9,330.
The ten departure stations with the highest foreign tourist volume in July 2026 were:
Yogyakarta: 21,933 foreign tourists
Gambir: 18,480 foreign tourists
Bandung: 9,330 foreign tourists
Surabaya Gubeng: 4,194 foreign tourists
Pasarsenen: 4,093 foreign tourists
Malang: 3,661 foreign tourists
Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng: 3,167 foreign tourists
Probolinggo: 3,061 foreign tourists
Lempuyangan: 1,977 foreign tourists
Solo Balapan: 1,808 foreign tourists
These ten stations served 71,704 foreign tourists, or approximately 73.97% of all foreign tourists using long-distance trains in July 2026. The distribution highlights the strong role of rail in connecting Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Malang, Semarang, Probolinggo, and Solo with various destinations and tourism activities in each region.
“Tourists can move from one city to another with scheduled journeys connected to various destinations. KAI will continue to maintain service quality so that the train travel experience becomes increasingly comfortable and memorable for tourists exploring Indonesia,” Anne concluded.
