Reconstruction shows Gunawan involvement in Paulus' shooting

Damar Harsanto The Jakarta Post Jakarta

Gunawan Santosa's suspected involvement in the shooting of PT Aneka Sarana Bakti (Asaba) finance director Paulus Tejakusuma was revealed in the reenactment of the shooting on Jl. Angkasa Raya, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, in front of Golden Hotel, on Sunday.

The reenactment showed that Paulus -- who survived the June 6 shooting but suffered serious injuries to the chest, chin and right shoulder -- was driving his silver Toyota Camry with license plate No. B1536QK to his office.

Paulus, who lives at Wisma XII, Blok C1/26, Sunter Podomoro, North Jakarta, was waiting at a red light and bought a newspaper from a street vendor, Irwan, when Gunawan and marine Second Corp. Suud Rusli approached from the opposite direction on a Yamaha Crypton motorcycle.

Both suspects shouted at Irwan to step aside so Suud could shoot Paulus. Suud then got off the motorcycle, approached Paulus' car, leaned on the driver's window and shot the victim.

Suud fired at Paulus with a 38 caliber FN pistol with a silencer from under his armpit to avoid public attention. Paulus was hit in the chest and neck.

The suspect then jumped on the motorcycle with Gunawan and both fled the scene.

Paulus shouted for help to Irwan who later called another vendor Dharma. Dharma then reported the incident to a policeman on duty at a nearby police post. Paulus was then rushed to Husada Hospital in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

The reconstruction was led by Kemayoran Police chief Comr. Yehu Wangsajaya and took place from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Due to the reenactment, police had to reroute traffic in the area.

The reconstruction was tightly guarded by a company of policemen and two trucks of marine personnel. Many passersby and guests of the Golden Hotel also witnessed the reenactment.

Gunawan, alias Acin, was arrested by police on Sept. 11 in an upmarket rented apartment on Jl. Industri Raya, Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta.

Since the shooting he had undergone plastic surgery to alter his facial features. He also had three fake ID cards with three aliases of Indra Amapta, Dustin Bakrie and Kevin Martin.

Last week, police also conducted the reconstruction of the shooting of PT Asaba president director Boedyharto Angsana and bodyguard Second Sgt. Edy Siyep of the Army's Special Forces (Kopassus). Gunawan was the alleged mastermind of the fatal shootings with Suud and three other marines as the hit men.

Police alleged that the motive behind the shootings was Gunawan's hatred toward Boedyharto and Paulus. Boedyharto, who was Gunawan's father-in-law, fired Gunawan after Paulus discovered Gunawan had embezzled company money.

Gunawan was sentenced to two years and six months imprisonment after being convicted in the embezzlement case and was serving time at Kuningan Penitentiary, West Java. However, he managed to escape in January.

Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Makbul Padmanagara had said that police were ready to submit Gunawan's dossiers to the Jakarta Prosecutor's Office.
