Recommendations to the govt

In order to maintain a reform agenda, so that the goal of a new democratic Indonesia will be achieved, and as a result of the Symposium on Clean and Good Governance, held in Bandung, the Center for Information and Development Analysis states that:

1. In the case of corruption, collusion and nepotism practices by former president Soeharto, the People's Consultative Assembly/House of Representatives (MPR/DPR) must force the new government, especially the attorney general to reopen the case and finish it as soon as possible with a fair and trustworthy trial.

2. In order to create clean government, the MPR/DPR must force the new government under President Abdurrahman Wahid to declare to the public the income of national and local government staff transparently.

3. To avoid, anticipate and combat corruption more systematically, the DPR must immediately propose a new, more relevant anticorruption law.

4. The dual function of the Indonesian Military (TNI) should be terminated, and TNI should assume its original function as the guardian of the country.

5. We agree to the amendments of the 1945 Constitution to ensure a balance of power in executive, legislative and judicial institutions.

6. We urge the government to ensure that the Supreme Court be independent and free from interference of any pressure groups.

7. The laws which are no longer relevant should be reviewed.
