Recognition of High-Performing Local Governments Drives Innovation for Public Benefit
Recognition for local governments is not merely provided as an award for performance achievements. More than that, such appreciation can serve as a momentum to encourage local governments to continue innovating and sharing best practices that have been successfully implemented.
The Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, stated that providing appreciation to local governments is expected to motivate regions to improve performance while introducing various innovations that have benefited the community.
“This activity can also serve as a means to motivate regions to continuously improve performance while showcasing various best practices that have been implemented,” said Tito, as reported by Antara on Friday (4/9/2026).
According to Tito, regional development is not only measured by economic growth but also by the ability of local governments to provide high-quality public services and respond to various community needs. This includes sustainable environmental management, equitable access to education and health, and the provision of decent housing. To achieve this, local governments are required to present breakthroughs and innovations tailored to the characteristics and challenges of each respective region.
Innovation is Key to Improving Local Government Performance
As the supervisor and overseer of local government administration, the Ministry of Home Affairs holds a strategic role in encouraging innovation and strengthening regional governance. Innovation is vital because every region faces different challenges and possesses different potentials. Therefore, local governments need to develop solutions that are not only effective but also provide real and sustainable impacts for the community.
Best practices successfully implemented in one region can also serve as inspiration for other regions to develop similar approaches according to their specific needs.
These efforts are being implemented through the Batch II Regional Sulawesi High-Performing Local Government Awards. This event provides recognition to local governments with the best performance in several fields, including waste management and environmental preservation, improving access to and quality of healthcare, expanding educational access, and the implementation of the 3 Million Houses Programme.
Previously, similar events were held in various cities, such as Batam (Sumatra Region), Bali (Java and Bali Region), and Balikpapan (Kalimantan Region). Through these awards, local governments are expected to be further encouraged to introduce innovation, strengthen collaboration, and produce a tangible impact on society.
The 2026 Batch II Regional Sulawesi High-Performing Local Government Awards are expected to drive local governments to continue innovating, improving the quality of public services, and presenting various breakthroughs that provide real benefits to the community.
