Reclamation of city's north coast
Reclamation of city's north coast
From Kompas
Much has been written in the media about reclamation of the
Jakarta's north coast, which has a negative impact on various
areas. But it is really surprising that new ideas continue to
emerge and are forwarded to the President and the House of
Representatives.
The negative impacts are, among other things, I believe, that
the reclamation project will disturb the cooling system of the
steam generated electricity plant at Muara Karang and the
submerged toll road heading for Soekarno-Hatta Airport and its
surrounds.
It should be noted that the project will destroy the ecosystem
in the area -- the destruction of the mangrove forest, the
extinction of flora and fauna in Muara Angke. Besides, many long-
established fishermen would lose their means of livelihood and
residences.
Are the project authorities aware of the sufferings of those
people. Why? Don't they also realize that Indonesia is not only
Jakarta or Java? Why not build the Waterfront City in another
part of the country, such as Irian Jaya, or Kalimantan, or
Sulawesi, or Sumatra, so that these islands can also develop
prosperously.
