It is not impossible to rebuild Aceh without incurring fresh
debts. The rebuilding of Aceh must be viewed as a problem of all
Muslims the world over. If all Muslims can help Aceh rebuild
itself, Indonesia will no longer need foreign loans.

It must be remembered that our debts now stand at some US$150
billion. If "foreign donors", who have promised to donate a
certain amount of money but cannot be expected to keep their
promises fully, help us to get out of this short-term disaster,
they will drag us into a long-term disaster because with their
debts we may be dependent on them. Besides, these debts may also
lead to foreign intervention in our internal affairs, as some of
these foreign donors may have ulterior motives. If the government
cannot take care of its own people, who will?
