Hamas has announced its agreement to the Gaza peace plan after consulting with various Palestinian factions. The group revealed that the primary reason for making these concessions is to end the war and save the Palestinian people from the severe humanitarian conditions currently facing the Gaza Strip.

In an interview with Al Arabiya on Friday (3ally 31/7/2026), Hamas official Dr Ghazi Hamad stated that the peace agreement was reached amidst the “difficult and heavy” conditions faced by the Palestinian people. He explained that Hamas’s top priority is to protect civilians and end the humanitarian suffering that has persisted for months in the Gaza Strip. However, Hamad emphasised that Hamas will not abandon its political agenda.

Furthermore, Hamad noted that the decision to approve the Gaza peace plan was not unilateral but resulted from intensive discussions with Palestinian political forces. During the interview, Hamad revealed that Hamas has “chosen to make concessions for the sake of saving the Palestinian people.”

He asserted that these concessions do not signify a surrender of national rights or Hamas’s political goals. “We will not cease our efforts to achieve the goals of the Palestinian people,” Hamad stated, adding that while the agreement addresses current realities, it does not alter the group’s fundamental political position.

Regarding the sensitive issue of Hamas’s disarmament, Hamad stated that Hamas will not surrender its weapons immediately or unilaterally. He emphasised that disarmament would be part of a reciprocal implementation process. The execution of this provision depends on all parties, including Israel, upholding their commitments according to the agreement. Hamad added that a schedule has been set for various stages, including provisions regarding weaponry and security arrangements.

Hamad further asserted that the agreement includes the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, based on a schedule detailed and agreed upon by the relevant parties during the implementation phase.

These statements from Hamad follow the announcement of a draft comprehensive peace agreement for Gaza, which is set to be implemented within 14 days of approval by the relevant parties. The draft agreement includes transferring the administration of Gaza to an independent national committee, halting military operations, deploying international stabilisation forces, and launching a reconstruction plan, alongside arrangements for disarmament and the reorganisation of the security system. Israel has not yet officially approved all details of the agreement. Several provisions, including the mechanism for deploying international forces and the schedule for Israeli troop withdrawal, are still under discussion, pending the announcement of the final draft and implementation mechanisms.
