Reasons Behind the Designation of 13 July as Belief in God Almighty Day
The government has revealed the reasons for designating 13 July as the Day of Belief in One Almighty God. Minister of Culture Fadli Zon stated that the date was chosen for its historical value, specifically its connection to a session of the Investigating Committee for Preparatory Work for Independence (BPUPKI). “The designation of 13 July is a historical one, because it is associated with the grand meeting on 13 July 1945 when discussions about our constitution took place,” Fadli said during an event with the Supreme Council for Indonesian Belief in God Almighty (MLKI) at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) on Monday, 6 July. Fadli explained that the designation of the Day of Belief in God is also a constitutional mandate, referring to Article 32, paragraph 1 of the 1945 Constitution, which states that the state advances Indonesia’s national culture. He noted that the decision also references Law Number 5 of 2017 on the Advancement of Culture, which states that Indonesia is built on a foundation of diverse beliefs. “The designation of the Day of Belief in One Almighty God serves as a reminder to all of us that Indonesia is built on a foundation of diversity, tolerance, and respect for the dignity of every citizen,” he said. However, Fadli has not yet decided whether 13 July will become a national holiday. “Although if it were offered, many would want it, but a holiday could perhaps be optional if it is fought for,” he remarked. Meanwhile, Director General of Cultural and Tradition Protection Restu Gunawan added that the designation of the Day of Belief in God was a long process. He mentioned that the MLKI had been proposing it since 2005, and the discussions involved believers and organisations under the Ministry of Culture.
