Reasons Behind Ayatollah Khamenei's Unburied Status
More than seven weeks after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Iranian government has yet to bury the former Supreme Leader. What is really happening?
Citing NDTV and Hindustan Times on Monday (20/4/2026), Iranian authorities have not yet made a final decision on the burial location of Ali Khamenei.
This indicates that the Tehran government, now led by Mojtaba Khamenei, Khamenei’s son, is busy fending off existential threats posed by US and Israeli forces.
However, a security expert assesses that Iranian officials are “too afraid” to hold a grand and lavish funeral ceremony for the late Supreme Leader.
In 1989, Iran held a massive funeral ceremony lasting several days for Khamenei’s predecessor, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Millions of Iranians flooded the streets of Tehran to attend Khomeini’s funeral ceremony.
However, a similar scene cannot be seen for Khamenei as the war between Iran and the US-Israel continues to rage.
Behnam Taleblu from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies told the New York Post that the Mojtaba regime is paralysed by fear, and Iran is not in a position to hold a grand commemorative ceremony amid a war marked by a fragile ceasefire.
“Simply put, the regime is too afraid and too weak to take the risk,” Taleblu said in his analysis.
Taleblu assesses that Iran’s inability to hold Khamenei’s funeral for weeks “reveals a lot”.
“The Islamic Republic likes to talk big about controlling the streets, but a 50-day internet blackout tells you all you need to know. The regime fears the consequences if the truth is revealed,” he stated.
Several reasons could be causing Iran to avoid a grand funeral ceremony. According to Taleblu, Tehran is still gripped by concerns over potential Israeli airstrikes and nationalist protest actions. Another reason is the puzzle surrounding Mojtaba, Iran’s new Supreme Leader, who is absent.
It has been several weeks since his father’s death, and Mojtaba has yet to appear in public. The Tehran regime must explain Mojtaba’s absence if they decide to bury his father in the near future.
In early March, Iran’s Fars News reported that Khamenei would be buried in the city of Mashhad, a city in northeastern Iran, which is the birthplace of the deceased. The city of Mashhad is located on the Iran-Turkmenistan border, far from Israel.
At that time, Tehran stated that the final tribute ceremony would last three days, and the funeral procession would be announced later. However, no ceremony has been held to date.
Khamenei Reported Dead
Ali Khamenei died as a result of a US and Israel attack in Tehran on Sunday (1/3). US President Donald Trump announced the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
“Khamenei, one of the most evil people in history, is dead,” Trump said on his social media network Truth, citing AFP on Sunday (1/3/2026).
The US and Israel have been attacking Iranian territory since Saturday (28/2). Khamenei’s residence complex in Tehran is said to have been hit by dozens of bombs. Iranian media also reported that Khamenei’s daughter and grandchildren were killed.
Iran eventually issued an official statement regarding the news of Ali Khamenei’s death in the Israeli and US attack. The Supreme Leader of Iran has been confirmed dead.
“The Supreme Leader of Iran has achieved martyrdom,” as reported by the state broadcaster IRIB citing CNN International on Sunday (1/3).
