Reason Pramono Appoints TransJ to Manage Transport to Thousand Islands

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has revealed the reason the Jakarta Provincial Government decided to transfer the management of transport from mainland Jakarta to the Seribu Islands to PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta). The decision was based on Transjakarta’s experience in managing public transport in Jakarta and the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek).

“Why Transjakarta? Transjakarta’s experience in managing transport, both within Jakarta itself and later as Transjabodetabek, has, thank God, been running well,” said Pramono in the Setia Budi area, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (11/8/2026).

According to Pramono, Transjakarta’s current management is also considered relatively good and transparent. This was one of the considerations for the Jakarta Provincial Government in handing over the management of transport to the Seribu Islands to Transjakarta.

“So we believe that, with that experience and also with the current management being relatively good and transparent, I am confident that next year, hopefully, transport to the Seribu Islands can be properly organised,” he said.

Pramono explained that transport to the Seribu Islands has so far been managed by the Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub). The Jakarta Provincial Government considers that management by Transjakarta can be carried out more professionally because it has a different management character.

“At present, everything is actually managed by the Transportation Agency, but because the bureaucracy that manages it is different from private entities, regional-owned enterprises (BUMD), or the private sector, we have therefore decided that starting next year it will be fully managed by Transjakarta,” he explained.

Pramono hopes that the transfer of management can improve the quality of transport to the Seribu Islands.

On the same occasion, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) also expressed support for efforts to improve connectivity to the Seribu Islands. AHY said access to the Seribu Islands must be made closer, easier to access, and more affordable for the public.

“Clearly, if it becomes closer, more accessible, and more affordable for the public, not only those who own yachts can come to the Seribu Islands, but Jakarta residents can truly visit these islands, whether for work, for tourism, and so on, we must encourage this,” said AHY.

AHY considers that improving inter-regional connectivity is something the government must continue to promote. He also opened the door for further discussion with the Jakarta Provincial Government regarding transport strategy to the Seribu Islands.

“In principle, all efforts to improve inter-regional connectivity, yes, we will continue to encourage,” concluded AHY.
