Reason Indian PM Narendra Modi Will Visit Prambanan Temple

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta. Modi is scheduled to visit the largest Hindu site in Indonesia on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.

Modi will be in Indonesia for three days, from Monday to Wednesday, 6-8 July 2026. Foreign Minister Sugiono revealed the reason behind Modi’s plan to visit Prambanan during this series of visits.

“He plans to visit Prambanan Temple because one of the agreements reached between Indonesia and India is an effort to undertake the renovation or restoration of Prambanan Temple,” said Sugiono while welcoming Modi’s arrival at Halim Perdanakusuma Airbase, Jakarta, on Monday.

Before travelling to Yogyakarta, Sugiono noted, Modi will attend state events at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. There will be a private meeting between PM Modi and President Prabowo Subianto, followed by a closed-door bilateral meeting.

Sugiono stated that Indonesia and India will sign several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during Modi’s visit. “These cover the fields of defence, education, health, and also technological development,” said the Gerindra Party politician.

President Prabowo welcomed Modi’s arrival in Jakarta on Monday, 6 July 2026. Prabowo was present when Modi landed at Halim Perdanakusuma Airbase today for his three-day visit.

Prabowo was seen waiting at the foot of the Indian presidential aircraft stairs to greet Modi. The two leaders shook hands and embraced upon meeting. An honour guard was also seen escorting Prabowo and Modi as they walked to their vehicles.

At the same time, several Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) fighter jets flew overhead. Modi’s arrival was also accompanied by a ceremonial cannon salute.

Before entering their vehicles, Prabowo and Modi watched a None Kemayoran dance performance held near the motorcade. Both heads of state observed the dance before departing.

Accompanying Sugiono in welcoming Modi at Halim Airbase were several ministers from the Red and White Cabinet. Also present were State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

Prabowo welcomed Modi following the departure of Singaporean PM Lawrence Wong from the same airport. Wong was in Indonesia from Sunday to Monday, 5-6 July 2026. Earlier that morning, Wong was received by Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace for a bilateral meeting with their respective delegations.
