JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Toyota Calya car that was driving against traffic and subsequently attacked by a mob in Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (February 25, 2026), did so after the driver was suspected of using fake license plates.

The Head of the Central Jakarta Metro Police, Commissioner Reynold Hutagalung, said that before the incident of driving against traffic, the car driver, with the initials HM, was stopped by police officers.

“The car with license plate number D-1640-AHB was suspected of using fake license plates, so it was stopped by two traffic police officers,” Reynold told reporters at the Tanah Abang Police Station on Wednesday evening.

Then, at the Bungur intersection, the car turned left and drove against traffic towards the west.

Upon arriving at the Menara Bidakara Alfa Land (MBAL) intersection, the car continued straight, driving against traffic on Jalan Pos.

Then, the car turned around at the MBAL intersection and turned left, driving against traffic on Gunung Sahari street.

“At that point, the car was involved in an accident with a motorcycle,” said Reynold.

As a result of the incident, a woman from Cengkareng, West Jakarta, who was riding a motorcycle at the scene, suffered injuries.

A motorcycle belonging to a resident was also damaged on the front and right side.

Previously, a video recording the car driving against traffic and being chased by residents went viral on Instagram on Wednesday.

As reported by the Instagram account, @lintasjakartaupdate, a black car was seen speeding against the flow of traffic.

The car continued to drive towards the traffic congestion while being chased by residents.

The rear window of the car appeared to be broken after being hit by a helmet thrown by a number of residents.
