An estimated 143 million people, approximately 50.6% of Indonesia’s population, are projected to travel during the 2026 Lebaran holiday season. This includes 76.24 million private car users, 24.08 million motorcyclists, and 23.34 million bus passengers. The scale of this movement creates complex challenges for traffic management and transportation safety, requiring accurate monitoring across roads, transport hubs, and public transportation systems.

Axis Communications, a global leader in network video technology, has highlighted that real-time monitoring systems and intelligent analytics are becoming essential tools for authorities to maintain situational awareness and respond rapidly to incidents during peak travel periods.

According to Johny Dermawan, Country Manager of Axis Communications Indonesia, modern monitoring technology has evolved beyond traditional surveillance. Contemporary systems generate data that helps authorities understand traffic patterns, detect incidents early, and improve operational response. A Thought Lab report titled “From Future Vision to Urban Reality,” supported by Axis Communications, emphasises that real-time data plays a crucial role in managing urban mobility.

The data generated from monitoring systems enables transport sector policymakers to operate various services more effectively, including traffic management, parking systems, public transport, and digital mobility platforms. Real-time data availability also allows transport initiatives to be tested through pilot programmes before large-scale implementation, enabling policymakers and operators to evaluate policy effectiveness and refine systems based on reliable operational data.

Vicky Gitasiswaya, Key Account Manager for End Customer at Axis Communications, noted that modern monitoring systems equipped with intelligent analytics can support various operational functions in transport environments. One example is intelligent traffic signal management, where monitoring systems collect data on vehicle queue lengths at congestion points, which is then analysed to optimise traffic light timing and reduce bottlenecks.

Monitoring technology also enables rapid incident detection. Cameras equipped with analytics can identify unusual situations such as vehicles stopped in active lanes or making abnormal direction changes. Analytics embedded in network cameras can automatically detect unusual road conditions and send alerts to operators, enabling faster response and minimising incident impact on traffic flow.

Beyond road monitoring, camera systems are increasingly used inside public transport vehicles such as buses and trains, allowing operators to monitor activities from multiple angles in real-time, even while vehicles are moving. When integrated with wider monitoring networks, these systems provide comprehensive situational awareness and enable faster coordination during incidents. Integration of various monitoring data sources also enables development of integrated monitoring centres, such as Real-Time Crime Centres (RTCC), which combine data from cameras, radar, audio devices, and intelligent analytics to give policymakers and operators clearer operational awareness and more effective response coordination.

The Indonesian Ministry of Public Works is accelerating repairs to several national road sections ahead of the Lebaran travel season, with national road condition already reaching 93.5% soundness. Operation Ketupat Jaya 2026 in the Metro Bekasi Police jurisdiction involves 1,238 personnel from police, military, local government, and related agencies. Nationally, Operation Ketupat 2026 will secure 185,607 facilities, including mosques, terminals, ports, and airports, during the 13-day operation from 13 to 25 March. The operation aims to ensure the entire Lebaran holiday travel period and Eid al-Fitr celebrations proceed safely, comfortably, and smoothly.
