Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has signalled a strong intention to expand its product line in Indonesia through its premium brand, Denza. One model being prepared is the Denza B5, which was previously introduced to the public at an automotive event in February.

President Director of BYD Motor Indonesia, Eagle Zhao, stated that the company is studying the right timing to bring the model to the domestic market. According to him, the initial response from Indonesian consumers to the vehicle has been quite significant.

“Firstly, thank you for your attention to our very specific model, the Denza B5. Since its debut last February, we have truly gathered considerable interest from consumers,” said Eagle Zhao during the BYD Ramadhan Sportainment event in Jakarta on Monday (9 March 2026).

The relatively high market interest has led the company to seriously consider the timing of an official launch in Indonesia. However, Eagle has not yet revealed the exact schedule for when the vehicle will be brought to market.

“We are very serious in considering when we can launch this model in Indonesia,” he said.

In addition to the B5, BYD is also preparing other models from the Denza line for Indonesia. One that has already been confirmed is the Denza Z9 GT, the flagship model of the brand.

Zhao assured that the vehicle will arrive in Indonesia this year, although not in the near term.

“The Z9 GT is one of the flagship models under the Denza brand. It is very much confirmed that it will be launched in Indonesia this year,” he said.

However, he stressed that the launch will not take place in the first half of this year.

“Not in the first semester, but at some point in the second semester,” added Zhao.

The seriousness of Denza’s expansion in Indonesia is also evident from the direct involvement of BYD’s headquarters in communications with local media. Zhao noted that the company has even assigned a special representative from headquarters to attend activities in Indonesia.

“Our headquarters is very serious in conversations with Indonesian media colleagues. For that reason, they have specially assigned a PR representative from the headquarters to come here,” he explained.

He also signalled that new information will be shared soon, both regarding products and technology that will be brought to Indonesia.

“To be honest with media colleagues who are very close to us, we will not keep you waiting too long. We will meet again very soon,” said Zhao.

This move demonstrates BYD’s ambition to strengthen its position in the national electric vehicle market, particularly in the more premium segment through the Denza brand. With the relatively high initial response, the launch of these models has the potential to further intensify electric vehicle competition in Indonesia in the near term.
