Ready: More Than 84 Million Eid Travellers Choose Cars and Motorcycles
Jakarta – Private transport modes are expected to dominate Eid holiday travel patterns in 2026. The government projects that the majority of citizens will use personal vehicles rather than public transport.
This phenomenon presents a significant challenge for the government, as the dominance of private vehicles can increase the potential for congestion, particularly on major toll roads and arterial routes connecting different regions.
During a parliamentary working session, Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi reported that private cars remain the primary choice for Indonesian citizens returning to their hometowns for the holidays.
“Nationally, in terms of transport mode choice, private cars remain the primary means for holiday travellers with 76.24 million people, followed by motorcycles and buses,” Dudy said at the House of Representatives building on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.
The surge in private vehicle use is also evident from the high number of vehicles expected to traverse toll roads during the holiday period.
“The majority of car users utilise toll roads, reaching approximately 50.63 million people,” he explained.
Meanwhile, motorcycle users are expected to make extensive use of alternative routes outside main roads and toll roads.
“Motorcycle riders tend to choose alternative routes away from main corridors, approximately 8.65 million people,” Dudy continued.
This means total movement of around 84.89 million people using personal motorised vehicles.
This situation requires serious attention because the surge in vehicles on arterial routes can trigger congestion in areas connecting different regions.
According to Dudy, the government has also mapped out various transport hubs predicted to become the busiest points during the Eid holiday period and return journey.
He noted that Indonesia’s largest airport remains the centre of national air mobility.
“The busiest airport of origin is Soekarno-Hatta Airport and the busiest destination is also Soekarno-Hatta Airport,” said Dudy.
