Reading Defence Plea, Fandi — Medan Crew Member Facing Death Penalty — Pleads for Justice
Fandi Ramadhan, a crew member (ABK) from Belawan, Medan, who stands accused of smuggling two tonnes of methamphetamine, read his defence plea (pleidoi) at Batam District Court. Fandi asked the panel of judges to acquit him of the death penalty charge.
“Please go ahead and read it — you don’t have to stand. If you can’t manage standing, just sit down,” said presiding judge Tiwik before Fandi began his defence, as quoted on Monday (23/2/2026).
In his plea, Fandi explained how he initially came to work as an engine room crew member aboard the MT Sea Dragon. He recounted receiving information about working overseas and submitting his seafarer documents to a maritime employment agency.
Fandi stated he had never received any information indicating the vessel would be transporting narcotics.
“There was not a single statement or explanation I received suggesting the ship would carry prohibited goods, namely narcotics. In my entire life, I had never even seen what such substances look like,” he said.
In his defence, Fandi explained that on 14 May 2025, during a voyage to Phuket, Thailand, goods were transferred from another vessel at sea. However, he claimed he had no authority to question the captain’s orders.
Fandi said he was never involved in determining the cargo, route, or ports of call. He maintained he merely carried out his duties as an engine room crew member and had no motive to participate in illegal activities.
At the conclusion of his defence, Fandi appealed to the panel of judges and prosecutors for his acquittal.
“I am only asking for justice in my own homeland. The dark night bears witness that I worked under orders — to resist could have meant death,” he said.
