Reading AHY's Gestures on His Speech About Power
Democratic Party chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) briefly touched on the notion that power is not held by one person alone. He made the remarks in a speech during the Democratic Party’s 25th anniversary celebration at the party’s central leadership office in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Saturday (5/9/2026).
He first reflected on the Democratic Party’s journey, which has both won elections and spent time outside government. He then stated that power does not belong to any one person forever, describing it as a mandate from the people that carries a time limit.
“We ought to learn, we ought to learn from the ten years of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s administration. Including when the transfer of power took place peacefully and democratically after two terms. Power is not someone’s possession forever. Power is a mandate from the people that has a time limit,” AHY said.
Several parties subsequently commented on AHY’s statement. From outside the government, Andreas Hugo Pareira said he agreed with the remarks made by the eldest son of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. On the matter of power, Andreas then raised the principle of absolutism.
“What Mr AHY explained is indeed one of the basic principles in a democratic state, that power lies in the hands of the people, not in the hands of one person. If power belongs to one person, that is the principle of absolutist power,” Andreas said, quoted by detikNews on Monday (7/9/2026).
Meanwhile, from within the KIM Plus coalition, Ahmad Doli Kurnia said AHY’s statement reflected his readiness to fight in the upcoming general election. The Golkar deputy chairman also agreed with the substance of AHY’s remarks that power is not everlasting.
Beyond that, Doli also touched on the political axes emerging ahead of the 2029 presidential election. According to him, AHY’s statement opens the potential for a Cikeas axis.
“Some time ago, Budi Arie, representing one ‘political axis’ (Solo), loudly declared his readiness. Now we are witnessing yet another ‘political axis’ (Cikeas) giving strong signals. Yet both of these axes are currently ‘in the same boat’ within the government,” Doli said, quoted by detikNews.
