Raymond Chin's Controversial Advice for the Sandwich Generation
The role of the sandwich generation is significant, as they must divide their income to meet the needs of all family members. This phenomenon often occurs due to rising living costs, longer life expectancy, and a lack of financial preparation in old age.
Financial content creator Raymond Chin has his own views on the sandwich generation. He even admits that his opinion is considered controversial.
According to him, meeting daily needs is the obligation of parents. This means that obligation cannot be passed on to their children.
“If parents ‘burden’ their children, this is cruel. If parents, in quotation marks, burden and oblige their children to the point where the child is financially suffocated, in my opinion, that is the parents’ responsibility,” Raymond said in the BNI wondrX 2026 Financial Talkshow, Sunday (23/8/2026).
Raymond admitted that he still sets aside part of his income for his parents. However, he does so voluntarily.
“Personally, I transfer a three-digit million rupiah amount to my parents every month. But I transfer it because I want to, not because I am forced to. This is my controversial statement,” he explained.
He stressed that when this kind of thing is normalised, a vicious circle or bad habit will continue to repeat itself. For that reason, he urged the sandwich generation to break that cycle.
“If you here are part of the sandwich generation, because the situation is already like that, please have the mindset to break that chain,” Raymond asserted.
Breaking the chain is done through financial discipline and habits. Those who bear the role of the sandwich generation must be more aggressive in managing their finances.
“But if it has already happened, like it or not, we have to be different. So the mindset is still the same. Set aside, but like it or not, the amount set aside must be more aggressive. From the start, when we have income, 10% to support parents, 10% to support younger siblings, 10% for ourselves,” he concluded.
