Rawalumbu River in Bekasi Smells and Becomes Murky After Turning Deep Blue
Bekasi, KOMPAS.com — The Bekasi City Environmental Agency (DLH) says Kali Rawalumbu river is foul-smelling and murky after its colour changed to a deep blue. Based on preliminary investigations by Bekasi City DLH, the colour change is suspected to have been triggered by a 20-litre paint spill from warehouse activities as well as a paint shop located around the site. “The spill eventually flowed into residents’ domestic drainage and into a drain connected to the Kali Rawalumbu,” said Kiswatiningsih, head of Bekasi City DLH, in a press statement on Tuesday 19 May 2026. Preliminary observations indicate the water appeared murky and emitted a noticeable odour. However, officers did not find any sediment on the surface or bottom of the flow. Kiswatiningsih said further testing was necessary to determine the characteristics or type of contamination around the river flow. “The results require further laboratory analysis to confirm the contaminant’s characteristics and the level of impact on environmental quality,” Kiswatiningsih said. Initial testing showed a pH of 7.54, i.e., neutral. Additionally, the electrical conductivity (EC) measured at 644.35 µS, indicating dissolved substances in the water. Free chlorine level was 0.08 mg/L. Although several parameters remain within normal ranges, Bekasi City DLH says further examination is still necessary to ensure there are no other hazardous substances in the river’s flow. “We will continue monitoring and coordinate with relevant parties to prevent a recurrence,” Kiswatiningsih said. “We urge the public to actively help protect the environment and report promptly if they notice any sign of pollution in their area,” she added.
